Customer Review: Disappointing

I've heard so much about cobalt drill bits and how good they were for drilling through 'tough' metal. But when I tried these bits, even on a relatively soft metal, they didn't do any better than a standard wood/metal high speed drill bit. They 'burned' through the metal...but didn't do much 'drilling'. From what I had heard about cobalt, I expected to go through the metal like a hot knife through cold butter. Boy was I wrong. Maybe the same would be true for other manufacturer's cobalt drill bits as well. BTW: I'm just a weekend 'putterer', not a machinist, so you can take that into consideration when reading my review. [Follow-up: I talked to a general contractor about the above described disappointment with cobalt bits, and he told me that, for drilling even 'soft' metals, I was 'supposed' to put a 'drop' of motor oil...or even '3 in 1' oil...on the drill spot every few seconds to lubricate it. That would have prevented the burning action of the bits, and enable it to 'drill' much easier. I wish that the package directions had told me that.]
